att phone jack wiring
Im trying to wire a phone line. I’ve hooked up the jack correctly… still no dial tone! PLEASE HELP!?!?!

I bought a house built in 1955 and there is only one phone jack. It was old so I replaced it. I just called ATT and activated my phone service. They say I should have a dial tone. I’ve wired the jack correctly (green and red wires). Still nothing. does anyone know what the problem could be? I have no clue… and FRUSTRATED!

Not exactly sure how US phone wiring is done, but here in NZ, you have one twisted copper pair, usually white and red, but in your case green and red.

I would buy the cheapest phone you can find from a discount store, plug it in to a GOOD phone outlet to check it actually does go and isn’t a faulty phone on purchase(it DOES happen!), then chop the plug off, and then strip the ends, then twist them onto the green and red wires of the phone line.

It should not matter which way around they go, as an analog phone line has around 50v DC on it, and the phone has rectifying circuit to correct any polarity problem if you wire it the wrong way. The line voltage drops to around 6v DC when the line is looped by the phone(handset off the hook), but until that time, there is a 50v potential or so on the line, so use MODERATE caution – it can’t hurt you, but might give you a tingle if you touch both green and red wires at the same time.

If the cheap phone works when twisted onto the phone line like this, then the line is working, and it is just that your connections to the outlet are wrong, or incorrectly crimped.

In NZ, we use a “Punch-down tool” to connect the phone wires to the socket, and a screwdriver DOES NOT work as a punch-down tool, so you too must use the correct tool for making the connections to the phone line.

Good luck!
:)
