Can Cell Phones Ignite
Can a cell phone really ignite gasoline by making a phone call? Is it a myth or a proven fact?
The electrical code states that all devices within an area where solvents are being used must be intrinsically safe. That is all devices must be certified by a governing body as being safe. Cell phones don’t have this rating.
So legally you can’t have an unrated device within a certain distance of the pump.
In the practical sense its unlikely that it will cause a spark.
One theory is that pulling something out of your pocket will cause static electricity. Its not the phone but the sparks being generated on your clothes.
Another is if you drop something on the concrete it will cause a spark. I know for a fact that if you drop a screwdriver off a tall ladder it will spark. So in the case of a gas station your keys might get dropped on the ground while pulling out your phone.
