Two-pronged or three-pronged wall outlet?
I live in a rented apartment and noticed that all of the wall outlets downstairs are all three-pronged but most (if not all, too irritated to check) outlets upstairs are two-pronged. This didn’t really bother me until I bought an extension cord for a three-pronged outlet and forgot that my bedroom only has a two-pronged socket. I asked my landlord about it and he said that the upstairs had to be two-pronged for fire hazard reasons. I thought that three-pronged outlets were the preferred outlets to have in homes today in terms of surges and shortages. If not, what would the risk be of having three-holed outlets all throughout a two-story house? I’m also concerned because in my room I use a great deal of electronics (TV, gaming consoles, computer and cell phone chargers, etc) and read online that mostly only appliances should use two-holed sockets. What should I do?
Your landlord lied to you. The third prong is a safety ground and is there for safety. It protects you in case a live wire gets shorted to the case or frame of the thing plugged in. For example a toaster gets shorted, if there is no safety ground you touch the metal and get shocked. If there is a safety ground, then it shorts out and the breaker kicks.
It is a matter of your safety.
