Advice/Tips for bad experience: unlocking Sanyo M1 from Sprint carrier?
-Is it best to go to a phone store to have my phone unlocked?
-What other carriers are compatible after Sanyo M1 is unlocked?
-Are rumors true about Sprint phones having NO option of being unlocked? Or is it just that Sprint does not give out their MSL (unlocking) codes?
Since I have very little knowledge of unlocking cell phones, I’d also like to know if the unlocking MSL code is determined by the carrier (Sprint) or the manufacturer (Sanyo)?
Also, is it true that in attempt to unlock a phone, it may result in “breaking” it, making it as useless as a paperweight?
I’d also like to know if any other Sanyo M1 users have had bad experience: such as poor reception, or hearing the person you’re talking with but they are unable to hear you at all?
I just received my replacement M1 from Sprint, but still no reception in my entire apartment indoors&out.
I’d like to know how anyone fixed their problems also.

You won’t be able to ‘unlock’ a phone from a CDMA carrier (Sprint/Verizon). They have an ESN database of all the phones they sell which can be activated on their network. A phone sold by Sprint can only be activated by Sprint, Verizon won’t touch it. As for the MSL code, this will only allow you to program the phone number (MDN/MSID) and play around with some other system settings. Not very useful for your situation. With GSM (T-Mobile/AT&T) phones you can unlock them so you can put a SIM card from another carrier in the phone and it’ll work.
