Cell Phone Slang Texting
I have a question about cell phones and 5th graders?
Our 5th grade daughter has a cell phone to call us in case of an emergency or to call her friends to speak. She is not yet allowed to text. Before and after we gave her the phone we told her that there was to be no texting whatsoever. She was also instructed to tell her friends that she could not text or her phone would be taken away. We are doing this to set rules and keep limits. One child disrespects our wishes and today sent a text “What up tricksta sista?” To me, this means something…the child may have no clue, she is a balanced child from what I can tell. I plan on calling her Mom to have her remind her daughter not to text mine. My question – Should I tell her Mother the content of this text or am I overreacting to the message? They are just 11 years old. (Tricksta Sista is slang prostitution talk.)
OH! No cell phone at school!
She takes it with her if she goes to a sleep-over or has some talk time with her friends.
I don’t know who your carrier is, but I can (and have) block specific numbers and email addresses from texting me by logging into my account through Sprint’s website. I’ve only blocked numbers because I do text my friends and family, but Sprint also leaves instructions to call customer support if you wish to block all texts except for the ones from Sprint. I’d call your carrier and see if they can do the same for your daughter’s phone.
As for the message, it’s probably the girl’s new phrase for the week and will be replaced when she hears another from someone else at school or on TV. I agree, it’s not a very appropriate thing to come out of a fifth grader’s mouth. If you feel you need to bring it up with her mother, go for it, especially if you don’t think that others should be referring to your daughter as such. I’d be pretty put off if another child called my daughter that being as young as fifth graders.
