Cell Phone Telemarketing Hoax

DO NOT CALL REGISTRY? TRUE OR FALSE?
I recently received an email that stated I needed to call 888-382-1222 if I wanted to keep my cell phone number private from the public (and telemarketing companies). Is this a hoax, or is it really a legitimate FTC (Federal Trade Commission) procedure?
I would call just in case
