Cell Phone Types Cdma
Seeking technical information on the communication process between cell phone and base station?
I am looking for a technical paper which discussess the process of discovery/initiation between cell phone and base station – for all current cell type technologies (CDMA, GSM, 3G, etc) – For example, how is the base station selected, how initiation of discovery occurs, then the handshake process, the channels of communication used, the type of data that is been in tranfered, what format does the data take, is it encrypted or not, and so on and so on. I would apprciate it if anyone would be kind enough to direct me to a download site for these information – I have searched the web for a while {I probably need to improve my search ability – but seeking help on that would probably solicit too many responses

You can find all of the relevant standards for GSM and the WCDMA form of 3G on the 3G Partnership Project website at http://www.3gpp.org/specs/numbering.htm. For understanding selection of the base station, look at the 05.08 spec. under http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/Specs/html-info/05-series.htm. This applies specifically to GSM.
In general, GSM uses a form of ALOHA called “slotted ALOHA” to govern the random access portion of the network access initiation protocol.

Google “GSM network registration” or “CDMA network registration” for more on the process of finding and registering to the network.
Note that CDMA comes in multiple forms, WCDMA being the 3G extension of GSM and CDMA 2000 being another variety. There may also be other varieties of CDMA…
