What’s my best bet when it comes to a cell phone in London?

In Sept, I’m going to be in London for a year to study. Here’s my dilemma: I want to keep a local (Ohio, USA) number for friends and family. I currently have Sprint and their international plans suck, honestly. I want to be able to make international calls on it also. Is it better just to get an cell when I get over there with a new (English) number, and with what company should I go? What’s the cheapest way to keep in touch with my non-email using family, calling card or take sprint with me? Or another cell company in the US, if they have better international plans? What’s the best satelite phone to get, they all look the same but is there a better quality for the amount? Basically, what would you or have you done in my case.

Without reading up on the international plan which your network provider as, if it is anything like UK companies they will rip you off for making/receiving calls and the same goes for text messages.

When you are abroad and someone calls your cell, most companies charge you even if it is you who is receiving the call and when you want to call someone, the cost of making that call is very expensive. I would take the sprint with you but never use it except in an emergency.

I would buy a cheap phone while you are here in the UK, the main companies are as follows:

Virgin – http://www.virginmobile.com/vm/home.do
T-mobile – http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/
Orange – http://orangemobilephone.callsmobile.co.uk/
Vodaphone – http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispatch/Portal/appmanager/vodafone/wrp?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=templateBlank&pageID=VIRTUAL_HOME
O2 – http://www.o2.co.uk/

If you look through those companies, some offer great bundles for calling the US and Canada. For example T-mobile offers 50minutes calling time to both cell and landline phones in the US and Canada for £2.00.

If you can’t find a suitable plan which you like then a calling card would be the best way to keep in touch with your non-email family. You can buy these from any Post Office and you will never have trouble finding them as they are everywhere. Just look for the sign or ask someone, here is more information on those calling cards:
