Cellular phone service in Swaziland, Africa?
I will be traveling to Swaziland, Africa, this month. I have Cingular service. Cingular service is not available in Swaziland (international calling plan), but I have been told I can buy or rent a SIM card for my cell phone in South Africa that will allow me cell service in Swaziland. Does anyone have experience in doing this, and can tell me roughly how much a SIM card is? Is it easy enough to do/use? What is technically involved, if anything? Thanks!
The only thing that i can’t confirm with 100% certainty is that South Africa coverage will work in Swaziland. Also depending where you are and considering the mountainous/ hilly nature of the terrain you’re probably not going to get the kind service that you’re used to in the US.
Double check that your phone brand and model can be used with international sim cards– some do and some don’t (even within the phones sold by Cingular).
The price of the sim card should be cheap, I don’t have an exact number but i’m sure that my friend paid less than US$20 for his South African sim card– i think that it was a lot less. Mostly, the service is pre-pay so you buy a card which gets you a phone number and then you buy minutes which enables you to call and text. You can buy a sim card and minutes almost anywhere– the grocery store, the gas station, etc.
Calls to your phone are free but you’re going to be paying a lot to call out (then again, i was on a super-tight budget last time i was in southern africa so it could all be relative).
Technically, changing the sim card is really easy. Usually they are located near the battery in that back panel part and they just slide in and out.
If you get confused, don’t be afraid to ask someone, literally, almost anyone on the street. The difference in the nature of cell phone service in Southern Africa means that almost anyone who has a cell phone (which is almost everyone there as well) has had experience buying cards, changing cards, ect.
