Charging Cell Phones Overseas

Will my phone be charged when I travel abroad?
I’m going to travel to South Korea this summer, and I have a cell phone with a standard family plan from Verizon.
I plan to keep my phone off for the entire duration of the trip, and only want to take it with me to make calls/send texts from my gateway airport in the US.
I tend to receive a lot of texts in a day, so if I keep my phone off for the entire time I am overseas, I won’t be charged until I turn it on in the US, right? I just wanted to make sure.
If your phone remains off, you won’t be charged.
If your phone is turned on, you may be billed for receiving text messages outside the country.
