Iphone Ad Hoc Connection
Best way To Share a direct Ethernet internet connection to iphone over Wifi on Vista.?
Hi i have a toshiba laptop running windows vista and it receives an internet connection directly from the cat 5 cable coming from my modem this modem is NOT wireless but i would like to share the internet coming into my laptop over a wireless network to my iphone i have tried this by creating an ad hoc network but have no ideas what to do next i have been trying to this for a while now and would really appreciate some helpful advice thank you.
To share your internet connection with more than one device, you need a router/switch. A router/switch is a single device that will act (to use your own terms) as a ‘splitter’ for your Internet connection.
The router/switch (mistakenly but commonly called the router) an entirely separate item from your modem. You can get a wireless or a regular one. (see links) In these images the regular router has a WAN plug and the wireless router labels it Internet.
A single Ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN connection on the router/switch will make the Internet available on all the other plugs on the switch.
Since you want to access your Internet connection wirelessly on your iPhone, you will need a wireless router(router/switch) the ONLY data cable coming from your modem goes to the WAN/Internet port on your router, and then your computer goes to any one of the other ports.
The iPhone is designed to connect to the Internet via the AT&T wireless 3G network, so you shouldn’t need to use your own WiFi connection. The phone is also designed to connect to any allowed WiFi signal up to N, so once you’ve established a Wireless LAN, you should be able to connect to it with your iPhone.
