Iphone Camera Lens

Has anyone else experienced this with their iPhone?
It makes a sound as if I’ve received a text message, when I haven’t. Then the camera function opens, and an error message pops up on the screen saying something like ‘POP3 server can’t be found, do you want to continue?’
What could possibly cause this to happen? It has happened twice now. I have always hit the “Cancel” button before the camera lens could open, but I don’t even think I unlocked it before that popped up on my screen, so I know it wasn’t a matter of my hitting the camera icon by accident.
I agree, turn off, take out battery, back up everything on itunes and if that didn’t help, do a hard reset.
