iphone drawing apps
I’m a geek – Should I buy an iPhone 3G?

I would never normally ask a question like this since I am a geeky technology lover, but I can’t make up my mind here. I am an advanced PC user – I write software, build PCs and love to tinker with things.

I can’t decide whether the iPhone is good for me or not. I know it doesn’t have MMS, but apps will come allowing it to do that. I know it doesn’t even record video but there are programs already letting you do it. I am drawn to the fact that you have to tinker with it to get what you want out of it, but is it going to be customisable enough for me? Basically, if I jailbreak (hack) the iPhone, will I be able to install third party open source applications that are potentially limitless? I know they are selling them in the store but Open Source is much more my scene.

Also, if anyone knows what movie formats it can play and whether all formats could potentially be supported through a third party application I’d love to know. I’d love to hear your views!

i cant believe after all those answers no one said anything of value.
Right now, we do not know if the 3g iphone will ever be hackable. Some people say that anything can be hacked…. yet, were still waiting for a ps3 hack.
Before you decide to commit, look up reviews of the last iphone. the call quality was shit. if this tradition carries on, then theres really no point of getting it, you might as well get an itouch.
If open source is your thing, they you by no means want to have to pay for applications, and this is exactly what you would have to do.
you have to realize how much control apple is going to have. you must buy the product from them and install it using their software.. thats tight security and probably no way around it.
if you want to tinker with a phone, you want something that at least has been around long enough for you to be able to tinker with.. hint… symbian s60 or even windows mobile. (both shared sources)
if you can wait for a new phone, then perhaps you should look into the Android phone release in 2009.(open source)
I really dont know much more about it, but apparently there are many japanese phones that run linux.
We dont know what apps are going to be available, but i honestly doubt that there will be any major improvements on the media player due to the fact its sold as a multimedia device. (i could be wrong)
My opinion is to not get the iphone..
