Iphone Gps Module
What is a GPS module?
I saw a GPS module for the ipod touch and iphone, and was wondering what it is, and what it does. Will it allow me to use GPS with having to be connected to the internet via wifi or 3g?
GPS modules allow the device to utilize the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System). First generation iPhones (also known as 2G iPhones) did not come with GPS transceivers.
Since maps are updated via the internet, you must be connected to the internet to use it (either by WiFi or mobile network). WiFi use is limited to areas where WiFi is available. You can *use* it with WiFi to determine your location, provided you are in a WiFi hotspot.
3G is not an option since neither the iTouch or 2G iPhones support 3G. And newer 3G iPhones don’t need this module since they are already equipped with a more sophisticated “assisted” GPS chip.
