Iphone Hdr Photos

How do you feel about the pseudo HDR look?
I think it looks cool, but I understand HDR to mean taking 2 or more exposures of the same picture for a wider range of colors.. It seems, instead, like the HDR *effect* is taking over and its true definition is going to be lost…
My iPhone can automatically take HDR pictures, and there is an app that takes them even better because I can manually select the areas I want to focus on for each exposure (only 2).. do you think cameras will have this feature??
How do video cameras have the ability to evenly see dark and light exposures (as I see it in movies) while photo cameras cannot?
Personally, I think good HDR shouldn’t look like HDR. Last year, Tom Till wrote an article in Outdoor Photographer about natural looking HDR, but his images looked garish and unnatural. It was very sad considering what a talented large format photographer Tom is to see his new digital images looking like something some kid with his first camera and computer produced.
As for the pseudo HDR look, it has it’s place. I think it works great for portraits of sports athletes. However, it is very trendy, and I think like all photo trends that there is a tendency to push back against them after a short while.
It reminds me of the selective color process. 10 years ago it was all the rage. Today it looks very dated and kitchy.
Timeless images are just that. A good photograph from the 1950′s is still a good photograph today. Use of trendy post processing techniques are fine for an advertisement where the client will move on to some other look next year, but for clients who want timeless images, I think following the classic rules of lighting and composition are the way to go.
