IPod/iPhone OS 4.0 or Jailbroken 3.1.3?
Let me tell you about my jailbroken iPod. Then you tell me if it’s worth upgrading to 3.1.3
- I’ve downloaded a Winterboard theme which I have hacked to change themes automatically at the beginning of every hour (using iFile).
- The ability to multitask using ProSwitcher
- The ability to run apps in the bakcground
- I’ve changed my slider text (again, using iFile)
- Numeric Battery
- Customize my springboard by deleting the dock base, and removing the names of the apps on the dock to show only the images
And many more…so what would you do. Remember iPod Touch 4.0 does not come with multitasking. (Can anyone tell me why this is as well?)
Multitasking = poor performance in Steve Jobs’ opinion. So only the most recent devices with better processors get it. Same with wallpapers– they didn’t like how the icons looked in the 2g touches and 3g phones and it slowed down the phone somehow.
If you have an iPod touch 3rd generation (ie you bought it last fall or more recently) you can apparently get almost all of the features of iOS4– I don’t know if this includes a customizable slider/doc or not. If you have a 2nd gen iPod, don’t bother. All we got was a shiny doc, folders, some changes to the native icons, battery drain because wifi doesn’t hibernate, and problems with the screen flipping from portrait to landscape whenever the phone jiggles. Oh, and iBooks, which is so much slower than Stanza it’s troubling. I don’t want to jailbreak my devices, but after this OS release I have to say it was tempting to figure out how to do it. I guess I’m going to live with what I’ve sacrificed or missed out on to enjoy my homescreen folders. You should probably keep your JB if it’s working for you.
