Mobile Phones Ethiopia

Anybody out there that can help????
I have a cell phone I want to send to someone in Ethiopia. Unlike here there is only 1 mobile phone company and their phones do use chips like ours. Does anyone know if he puts his chip in this cell phone will it work there?
Theoretically, it should. The phone will disconnect from the service it’s on when it gets out of range so whatever SIM card they have should take over and get that service.
