What do I do if someone has stolen my identity?
I received a call today from a collection agency saying that I owed them 800 dollars from NTelos. I’ve never heard of ntelos until today. The lady at the collection agency said that it was for unpaid wireless bill. I have a cell phone through another company, so it seemed fishy. I called Ntelos and they said my account was past due and had been open for 4 years! I ordered my credit report through Experion and there is no evidence of this account or deliquency, however both the collection agency and NTelos had my ssn on file. What should I do now?
I smell a rat.
4 years is a long time for a crook to be paying for a bogus account, and then all of the sudden it goes past due.
I suspect either this NTelos is confounded about who you are exactly, or they are the ones pulling the BS.
One scenario that does happen is someone in the household, who would have access to your personal info, has opened the account; used the service, and all the sudden can’t pay the bill.

Credit Report Request Service(US Gov. approved site)
“This central site allows you to request a free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12 months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.”

It may show up on one of the alternate CR’s.
When under a fraud attack, post a “Fraud Alert” on your credit report.
Filing on one of the 3 major sites places it an all 3, according to them.

There are 4 major items you should do.
1. Place a fraud alert on your credit reports, and review your credit reports.
2. Close the accounts that you know, or believe, have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
3. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
4. File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.
